  • Author: Tara Hamrick
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 50 minutes
  • Total Time: About 7–13 hours (including chilling)
  • Yield: 1 casserole dish

Ingredients

  • French bread – 1 loaf (about 14-16 oz), cut into cubes
  • Cream cheese – 8 oz, cut into small cubes
  • Fresh or frozen blueberries – 1 ½ cups
  • Eggs – 8 large
  • Milk – 2 cups (whole milk or 2% works best)
  • Heavy cream – ½ cup
  • Maple syrup – ⅓ cup
  • Vanilla extract – 1 tsp
  • Ground cinnamon – ½ tsp
  • Salt – a pinch
  • Powdered sugar – for dusting (optional)

Variations:
Add lemon zest for brightness. Sub almond extract for a twist. Use brioche or challah instead of French bread for a richer flavor.

Instructions

1. Cube the Bread and Cream Cheese
Cut the bread and cream cheese into bite-sized cubes—tiny cheese pieces make sure every bite is creamy magic.

2. Layer It Up
In a greased dish, layer half the bread, cream cheese, and blueberries. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.

3. Make the Egg Mix
Whisk eggs, milk, cream, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt in a big bowl until smooth and fully combined.

4. Pour and Soak
Pour egg mix over layers. Press down gently so everything soaks up. Cover and refrigerate.

5. Chill Overnight
Refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight—this helps the bread absorb all the custardy flavor goodness.

6. Bake to Golden Perfection
Preheat to 350°F. Let casserole sit at room temp 30 minutes, then bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes until golden.

7. Cool and Serve
Let it cool slightly, then slice. Add powdered sugar or maple syrup. Cozy brunch magic, served!

Notes

  • Stale bread = perfect soak – I let bread dry out overnight; fresh bread once turned soggy—learned fast!
  • Frozen blueberries FTW – I toss frozen berries straight in—they thaw into juicy goodness, no fuss.
  • Pinch of salt is essential – Balances sweetness beautifully; learned this after a too-sweet first attempt!
  • Lemon zest lift – Ran out of vanilla once; citrus zest saved the day with brightness.
  • Bread upgrade – Use brioche or challah for extra richness. I do this swap in my Banana Bread with a Cozy Chai Spice Twist (same luscious vibe!).
  • Cream cheese cubes = pockets of joy – Keep them whole for cheesy blobs mid-bite. Cutting cream cheese into even cubes is messy. Use a warm cheese knife to slice cream cheese cleanly. Run it under hot water first for smooth cuts!
